How to Warm Up Your Home in the Winter

Winter is here, which means leaning into all things cozy at home. This time of year, when we’re facing short days and long, chilly nights, we like to approach interior design as if it were a warm sweater, incorporating elements that give off a sense of comfort. If you’ve been feeling the chill at home, we’re here to help you make your space feel as welcoming as a hug from an old friend. Here are some easy-to-incorporate cozy house tips from our Chicago interior designers that will lift your mood instantly!

Layer Rugs

When it comes to warm and cozy living room ideas, your flooring is always a good place to start. If you have hardwood or tiles floors, you can warm them up in the winter by laying down rugs. Rugs not only provide a warm, soft place to walk, but they also make your space feel more snug. Placing area rugs strategically in high-traffic areas, such as the living room, bedroom, and dining room can instantly make a space feel more welcoming. We recommend thick, plush rugs made from materials like wool for extra comfort underfoot.

Light the Fireplace

There's something so calming about the crackle of a real wood fireplace on a cold winter night. If you have a fireplace, take advantage of it by making it the focal point of your cozy house. Arrange seating around the hearth to encourage gathering and conversation. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace, you can always use an electric or gas-powered alternative that will mimic the warmth and ambiance without the hassle and clean up of traditional wood-burning fireplaces.

Hang Heavy Window Drapes

A lot of heat escapes through our windows, which is why it’s important to insulate them as much as possible. In addition to window glazing, we recommend investing in thick drapes that you can pull closed at night to provide additional insulation. Thick window treatments made from damask, jacquard, and velvet not only help keep the cold out but also add a luxurious, traditional look to your interiors. During the day, draw the curtains open to let natural light in.

Fabrics for a Warm House

Deck the halls with fabrics that make you feel cheerful and snuggly. Heavy knits, faux-fur, velvet, fleece, wool, and leather are a few options that we love to use in the winter to give furniture a luxe, textural look and feel. In addition to upholstery, we also like to drape knit and cashmere blankets over sofas and chairs, as well as at the end of every bed for added warmth.

Rearrange the Furniture

The beginning of each new season is a great time to rethink your furniture layout. Bring your sofa and chairs in closer to each other to create small seating areas that feel more intimate. Group seating around focal points like the fireplace or create a reading nook next to a bookshelf to encourage relaxation. By setting up these homey spaces, you’ll feel more engaged with guests and family members.

Top Interior Design Trends 2024

We can hardly believe it is almost 2024. This year has flown by and as always, the interior design industry has evolved quickly. As a leading Chicago interior design firm, we have to stay on top of all the changes going on, but certain trends and developments stand out in our mind more than others. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite interior design trends to consider for 2024, all of which we think will last many years to come.

Our Favorite Interior Design Trends 2024

Warm Neutrals

Neutrals continue to be popular in interior design, but instead of cool grays, the new year is ushering in a focus on warmer hues. Creamy beiges, light caramel, and earthy terracotta will take the place of cool, minimalist hues, bringing a soft, warm aesthetic to spaces. These new neutrals will create a cozy, comforting atmosphere while still providing a clean backdrop for bright furniture and accent pieces.

Shades of Blue

On the other end of the color spectrum, we’re going to be seeing a lot of blue in the new year. Blue is more popular than ever, with clients requesting it in every shade – from serene pastel blues to deep navy tones – throughout their homes. According to color psychology, blue brings a sense of calmness to spaces, and we can all use a bit more of that! Take this recent bathroom project we designed, where we used blue tiles for the shower to create a tranquil spa-like space. Whether used as an accent or as the primary color for walls or upholstery, we expect to see a lot more blue in 2024.

Retro Seventies

The spirit of the '70s is making a comeback in interior design. Bold, psychedelic patterns, earthy color palettes, and retro-inspired furnishings are popping up everywhere, but often with a subdued twist to meet modern tastes. In terms of kitchen trends 2024, mustard and olive hues are in full force, as is dark wood – elements that nod to the ‘70s. Our plan in the new year is to blend vintage-inspired pieces with contemporary decor to add create playful, fresh spaces that feel sophisticated.

Curvilinear Furniture

We’re calling it now: 2024 will be the year of flowing curves and artisanal accents. Instead of angular and boxy furniture, curvilinear shapes and organic forms will be taking over. Sofas, chairs, tables, and even architectural elements are embracing soft, curved lines, which not only look beautiful, but are more space-efficient. We also love that curved edges prevent painful run-ins!

3D Shapes

Along the same lines as the last interior design trend, 3D-shaped lighting and decorative objects will be very popular in the next year. Furniture, lighting, and decor items will feature geometric forms brought to life, creating moments of sculptural beauty and intrigue, like this orbital pendant light we used in a recent project. Instead of everything feeling flat and two-dimensional, with spindly legs and 90 degree angles, this trend brings depth, texture, and a sense of movement to modern spaces.

We think 2024 has a lot of promise, with trends that match the growing call for comfort and ease. These trends are a perfect blend of past and present, presenting lots of ways to create stylish spaces that feel personal and liveable. We can’t wait to embrace the new year head on and hope you will join us by using some of these exciting trends at home. Give our Chicago interior designers a call today to schedule a consultation and we’ll help design your dream home in 2024!

Setting Up The Ultimate Festive Bar Cart For Entertaining

Taking holiday entertaining to the next level, bar carts have become very popular with Chicago interior design firms as a stylish furniture piece in the living room, office or dining room. Not only does setting up a festive bar cart keep guests happy, but it also adds sparkle and sophistication to any home.

As we prep for the New Year and all the exciting times ahead, now is the perfect time to invest in a bar cart. Whether you prefer a sleek Art Deco cart, a casual rattan cart, or a simple wooden cart with wheels, these are our favorite bar cart ideas to make the most of your upcoming celebrations.

Choose a Theme

Hosting a holiday or birthday party? You might want to select a theme for your cart that will add to the festive mood. For example, a New Year’s bar cart might include mirrored trays, gold and silver-rimmed champagne glasses and ‘Happy New Year’ napkins. Deciding on a theme will help your cart feel cohesive as it ties in with the fashion and event decor of the evening.

Wine, Spirits, or Non-Alcoholic?

Once you’ve decided on your theme, it’s time to choose what you’d like to serve… Wine, champagne or a signature cocktail are the most popular options. If you’re serving a mixed drink, we recommend using a dispenser for cocktails to make serving easy. You could also put out a variety of spirits and mixers like tonic water, club soda and cranberry juice to let people decide what they would like to drink. Or, if you want to go the non-alcoholic route, hot chocolate or coffee in the winter and lemonade in the summer are always hits. Don’t forget the garnishes! Depending on the season, you might top off your drinks with classics like lemon and lime wedges and olives or more exciting ingredients like edible flowers, marshmallows, and cinnamon sticks. Be sure to offer a mixture of drink options so that everyone - from wine lovers to mocktail drinkers - can enjoy the festivities!

Stock the Essentials

Once you’ve decided what you’ll be serving on your cart, it’s time to gather your bar tools and glassware. Start off with a few must-have bar tools such as a jigger, bottle opener, corkscrew, strainer, and plenty of napkins. Depending on what type of drink you are serving, you might need glassware such as wine glasses, highball glasses, lowball glasses, shot glasses, and even mugs. Once you have all the basics covered, consider adding in any specialty items you may need for that specific drink. For example, if you are making martinis, you may want to pick up a shaker and martini glasses. It's also nice to have an ice bucket on hand to keep drinks and champagne cold. With these essentials stocked and ready, you’ll be prepared for anything your guests can throw your way!

Use Risers for Levels

When setting up your bar cart, one of the best ways to make it look attractive and add additional space is to use risers. Risers allow you to create different heights so you can group bar tools, glasses, and drinks separately. Your risers can be anything from cake stands to a stack of books – it’s more about the balancing of high and low than the riser itself. Don’t miss this opportunity to create a statement-making display.

Finishing Touches

As a finishing touch, Chicago interior designers will always recommend some artful accents. While you may already have decorated your cart according to a theme, take a look once you’ve set up your drinks to see if there is leftover space to indulge some more bar cart decor ideas. You don’t need to crowd the cart, but adding some flowers, a small lamp, a candle, or some sculpture can bring everything together. Of course, you can always opt to add a cheese board or bar snacks to your cart as well.

Now that your bar cart is all set up, it's time to enjoy being a great host! Whether you’re having a small gathering of close friends or throwing a large party, your holiday bar cart will serve as a focal point of the evening. Plus, with all your drinks an arms-length away, you’ll be able to enjoy the party without having to run back and forth to the kitchen every minute.

How to Make Your Home Holiday Party Ready

For groups small or large, coming from near or far, a great holiday party starts with a fun atmosphere, delicious food, and great conversation. Party planning can be really stressful, but getting your home staged and ready in advance will make everything go much more smoothly if you are hosting this year. Cleaning the house is essential, but there are a few additional tips we’d recommend to make sure everything is in order before your guests arrive. Once these preparations are complete, you'll be fully equipped to throw an unforgettable holiday party!

Make Room for Coats/Shoes

Before you start rearranging the furniture and pulling out the decor, it’s important to tidy a few areas in particular. As it’s chilly outside, everyone will be wearing coats that they will need to hang up when they arrive. Kickstart your cleaning by organizing the coat closet, and clearing your shoe rack, if you have one. This will make it easy for guests to know where to put their belongings when they arrive, helping you avoid unnecessary clutter.

Create a Flow

To make your guests feel instantly at ease in a new space, take a few minutes to consider the flow of traffic from the entryway to the party rooms. Is there any furniture that will be in the way when a room is filled? Consider the key areas that guests will spend time in, including the kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom. Make it easy for them to get from one room to the next and move any furniture out of the way that hinders the flow of traffic. For example, you might consider moving your coffee table to a bedroom to open up the living room, creating more standing room.

Add Additional Seating

Seating is one of the most important elements to get right at a party. Although standing is common, it's important to accommodate those who prefer to sit, particularly if you have elderly guests. We like to arrange seating in groups of three or four chairs, creating comfortable spaces for people to relax, engage in conversation, and enjoy each other's company. Store a few additional stools somewhere nearby in case you need to pull out extra seating at the last minute.

Soften Your Lighting

As one of the top Chicago interior design firms, we know lighting. It can make or break a space, and while recessed lighting has its purpose, no one likes a harsh glare overhead at a party. Instead, add dimmers to your lights or consider only using ambient light sources, like table lamps, chandeliers, pendant lights, and sconces. You can create an additional glow with a fireplace, candles, portable lanterns, and twinkle lights. Even the Christmas tree can be used as a source of atmospheric lighting for a Christmas party!

Put Up Holiday Decor

Finally, add the finishing touches to your holiday decor. Get creative! Drape garlands over the mantel and along the bannister as well as on top of mirrors and doorways. Put a Christmas tree in every room that guests will spend time in. Fill bowls with pinecones and ornaments and create centerpieces using holly branches. Add wreaths to your doors and twinkle lights to the porch. Tie everything in a bow! Finally, curate a few holiday playlists that will set the mood when your guests arrive.

Our Chicago interior designers wish you a season filled with joy!

How to Pick the Perfect Rug for Your Space

Autumn is the perfect time to ground your home with thick textures, warm colors, and lots of snug rugs. Rugs have the power to completely transform a room, bringing it together and making it a comfortable place to relax. However, they can be a big investment, and choosing the perfect one takes a bit of consideration. You’ll want a rug that not only looks beautiful in your space, but can also keep up with your lifestyle. As a leading Chicago interior design firm, we use several strategies when handpicking rugs for our clients' homes.

Consider Your Space

Before going rug shopping, look around your space. Whether you’re in the market for living room rugs or bedroom rugs, write down the qualities of the space. These will include how frequently the room is used, how big the space is for your rug, and key colors and textures. Based on this, you can start to get an idea of what type of rug you will need. For example, a playroom may require a durable and stain resistant rug, whereas you might like to have a plush, cozy rug in a bedroom.

Keep in mind that you can also use your rug to outline separate areas in a large open-plan room. For example, we recently designed a combo living and dining room and used two rugs to delineate each space. As they are matching, the rugs provide cohesion while making each space feel more special and intimate.

Measure the Floor Space

Precise measurements are key when you’re selecting a rug. Too big and your rug will actually make the room look smaller. Too small and it will be awkward and cheap looking. We recommend measuring the area where you intend to place the rug and even putting down masking tape to see how it looks. In a living room, like this recently designed one, it’s best to have all of your furniture at least part way on the rug. You coffee table should be completely on the rug while your sofa should have at least the front legs on the rug. If you can’t find a standard-sized rug that works for your space, remember that some furniture stores allow custom rug sizing, or you can have a rug cut down to suit your room.

Materials

Next, take some time to mull over the materiality of the rug. Do you need something strong and durable to serve as an area rug? Are you looking for a rug that dries quickly and can be used in the bathroom? Rug materials range from natural fibers like wool and jute to synthetic polyester and nylon blend performance rugs. We frequently opt for performance blend area rugs for clients with kids or pets as they are easier to clean and typically last longer.

Low Pile vs. High Pile

With a thick layer of fibers, high pile rugs are the plush, cozy, textural rugs of your dreams. However, they’re not always practical. More people opt for low pile rugs because they are easy to clean and durable. We tend to use low pile rugs in rooms that get a lot of foot traffic, like a living room. Then, we like to use high pile rugs to make a statement in a bedroom, office, or cozy library.

Choosing Rug Colors

More than anything, our Chicago interior designers love helping clients choose the colors and patterns of their rugs. Your rug can either have a grounding, neutral presence or it can add a splash of vibrancy to your space, like this blue and white geometric rug we used in a recent project. There are endless colors and patterns to choose from, so we recommend making a list of two possible hues for the room and choosing a selection of rugs that fit the bill before narrowing them down. You can even order samples from many rug companies to get a clear idea of the color, material, and pile.

Even if you already have rugs in your main rooms, it can be a fun and refreshing exercise to switch them out by season. Rugs can make a room feel cozy in the winter, or light and airy in the summer. Of course, you can also choose a forever rug that will set the foundation for many family memories. Whatever your goals are, we hope this guide has been helpful in steering you towards your perfect rug. Happy rug shopping!

Designing a Dining Room to Suit Your Lifestyle

The holiday season is fast approaching, which means that it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming celebrations, from Thanksgiving to festive gatherings. If hosting is on the menu for you, we recommend a dining room makeover as this will be one of the most used rooms this time of year. As one of the leading Chicago interior design firms, we’re happy to share our tips on how we design dining spaces for our clients to align with their needs.

Choose Formal or Functional

While many people today are opting for more casual dining areas, there are others who prefer a traditional formal dining room. What’s right for you will come down to factors like your lifestyle and how you like to use your dining table. Strictly functional options include a dining table in your kitchen or a long dining table in an open-plan living room. These might be good for families with small kids who don’t entertain frequently and want an easy solution where they can eat together without the fuss. For people who do enjoy entertaining guests, a traditional dining room makes sense as it creates a space to dine without distractions.

Pay Attention to Your Home Design Style

Photo credit: the life style dco

When it comes to designing your space, use your other rooms as a jumping off point. Pay attention to your home's existing design style - do you have a traditional home, or is it more modern, minimalist, eclectic, or coastal? You’ll want to create a design for your dining room that speaks to your style, ensuring that your dining area seamlessly flows into the rest of the home. Be sure to think about the colors and textures of your home when selecting furniture, decor, and upholstery for your dining room.

Consider the Number of People Dining

Do you often host large gatherings, or will your dining room mainly serve your immediate family? You’ll need to think about this when buying your dining set to make sure that you can accommodate everyone. While many traditional wooden dining tables can expand with the addition of leaves, modern glass and stone tables cannot. You will also need enough dining chairs for everyone – having some small stools on hand is always a good idea for when additional company stops by.

Add Storage

After you’ve settled on a dining table and chairs, it’s time to choose your other furniture. If you are planning to have a traditional dining room, we’d recommend a credenza, sideboard, or china cabinet. These will not only add surface space for hot dishes and drinks, but will also provide ample storage for your place settings, linens, candlesticks, vases, and more.

Take Inspiration from the Season

Taking inspiration from the current season can breathe life into your dining room and create a charming ambiance that you can enjoy yearround. Weave the colors and motifs associated with the season into your decor. For example, in autumn, you might paint the walls with a warm red, burnt orange, or chocolate brown to create a rich, welcoming space. As a finishing touch, bring in seasonal flowers for your centerpiece, or decorate the table with small pumpkins, berry branches, and gourds.

Don’t Forget Lighting

Finally, think about what lighting you need to make the most of your dining space. If you are primarily using the space for dining, then you can get away with only an ambient light source, like a chandelier or sconces. However, if you are planning to occasionally use your dining table as a homework space or crafts area, you’ll need overhead lighting to illuminate your projects.

Designed to elevate the everyday experience of eating, a dining room can have a big impact on your experience at home. It’s a place to gather with no phones or television, bringing people together to converse and enjoy a good meal together. As such, we believe in treating it with the utmost care; doing all we can to create a space that is welcoming and enjoyable. If you have any questions about your own dining room, or would like help in transforming your space, please contact our Chicago interiors today!

Creating a Cozy Fall Living Room

Out of all the seasons, there is something magical about decorating the home for fall. From thick blankets to glowing candles, pumpkin decor, and a fall wreath, you can create a sense of hygge that will keep you cozy when the nights get cold. As a leading Chicago interior design firm, we are often asked how to do a seasonal home refresh for autumn, specifically in the living room. Here are some of our favorite ways to create that inviting fall-inspired space that you'll love spending time in.

Use Traditional Fall Colors

Trade the crisp whites, light blues, and yellows of summer for earthy autumnal hues like burnt orange, scarlet, mustard yellow, and caramel. It might even be time to refresh your walls with a new coat of paint, and if so, using one of these colors will create a rich, moody atmosphere that will seamlessly transition to the rest of the year. You can even experiment with a textural paint effect like velvet, which will add dimension. Or, play it safe by sprinkling in touches of fall colors with thoughtful accent pieces, from amber glass vases to throw pillows.

Divide the Room

In the summer, an open plan style living room is ideal. It creates a light, open and airy feel that helps keep you cool and comfortable. However, in the fall and winter, we prefer the opposite. To make a space feel snug, rearrange your furniture so that chairs and tables are closer to each other and to the fireplace (if you have one). Use a room divider, like a vintage folding screen, to make the room appear more intimate. You can also layer rugs to delineate separate areas in the room.

Embrace Soft Textures

Dial up the coziness factor in your home with thick, luxurious textures and materials like velvet, faux sheepskin, cashmere, wool, and leather. Layer these in as throw pillows, blankets, and rugs to create warm, soft surroundings wherever you sit. You can even change out your lightweight lampshades for thicker patterned ones that add a cozy glow as well as texture to your space.

Add Ambient Lighting

Lighting is really important in the fall and winter when we don’t have as much natural daylight. We recommend layering lighting with at least three sources in your living room. For example, this might include a standing lamp, table lamps, and overhead lights. Having all three sources will give you options during the day and night. Next, layer in ambient lighting like lanterns, candles, a fireplace, and string lights to transform your living room into a rustic sanctuary.

Set Up a Bar

‘Tis the season of entertaining, so make the most of it by creating your own bar in your living room, like we did in this recent project. You can either set one up on a cabinet with your favorite fall cocktails, or create a spiced cider, coffee or hot chocolate bar for people to help themselves. If you don’t have room for an entire bar in your living room, you can always bring in a bar cart or a tray filled with all the goodies you need to enjoy a seasonal beverage and snacks.

Layer Cozy Fall Scents

If there is one thing that everyone notices when they walk into a home, it’s the scent. A home that smells like pumpkin pie or toasted apples instantly feels like fall. With candles, essential oil diffusers, and room sprays, you can fill the air with the inviting aroma of the season. We also love the smell of a lit fireplace, not to mention the crackling sound - it doesn’t get much cozier!

The living room is a great place to start with your fall decor because it can be enjoyed by everyone, but don’t let it stop there – you can spread the joy of the season throughout the entire home. And, if you’re looking to do a bigger renovation or design project this fall, be sure to get in touch with our Chicago interior designers – we’d be thrilled to help you bring the beauty of autumn into your space.

How to Use Color to Create Balance in Your Home (Copy)

One of the most important tools in transforming a space, color has the ability to shape the aesthetics and bring personality to your room. It has can energize you and put you in a positive mood, or it can make you feel relaxed and at ease. Whether you prefer a bold and bright look or a minimal balance of black and white, there is no denying the power of color.

Our Chicago interior designers have compiled this guide of living room color ides to help you decide which colors and what quantities you’ll need to make your home feel balanced.

Consult the Color Wheel

To master the following living room color ideas, we recommend having a color wheel handy. The color wheel is an indispensable visual tool that displays colors in relation to one another. The foundation for the wheel are the three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow, which are equidistant from one another. All of the colors in between these three can be created by combining them.

Triadic Scheme

If you love lots of color and aren’t afraid of making a powerful statement with your decor, then a triadic color scheme is perfect. It involves using three colors that are evenly spaced on the color wheel, ensuring that no one color overpowers the other two. Triadic color schemes should be bright and eye-catching without being overwhelming. For example, we recently designed a beautiful and artistic garden-themed bedroom with a pink, turquoise and yellow motif. By incorporating these three hues into the artwork, bedspread, and wallpaper, this triadic color scheme brought the feminine room to life.

Analogous Scheme

More soothing than a triadic color scheme, an analogous scheme uses colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, we recently designed a nursery using light peach, orange, and gold. These analogous colors create a soft contrast that is calming to the eye, which is perfect for a newborn’s room.

Monochromatic Scheme

Monochromatic may refer to one color, but it’s not as simple as that in an interior design scheme. Instead, a monochromatic scheme refers to using a combination of many different shades, tints and tones of one color. There are various ways you can use this scheme, from creating a cocoon-like bedroom of whites and creams to a jewel-like powder room with shades of green. Just remember that when sticking to a monochromatic palette, you’ll need to incorporate unique textures and layers to add dimension to your room and make it feel exciting.

Follow the 60-30-10 Rule

Now that you’ve chosen the two or three colors you’d like to use, it’s time to decide which you’d like to be your main color and which two will support. The 60-30-10 rule is commonly used in interior design to make sure your room isn’t overwhelming with too much of every color. The numbers correspond to the percentages of each color that you should use – 60% for the main paint color for living room, 30% for the next and 10% for your accent color. You don’t always have to follow this rule, but it is a good jumping off point if you aren’t sure how much of each color to use.

Don’t Forget Your Lighting!

Finally, don’t forget that lighting plays an important part in the appearance of color. You should look at color samples in both natural and artificial light sources at different times of the day to fully get the sense of what your room will look like.

Here at our Chicago interior design firm, we believe in color’s ability to bring a room to life. Whether you’re switching up artwork, reupholstering furniture or starting a design from square one, these ideas for room colors will help you achieve a balanced color palette. Be sure to browse our most recent projects to get a better look at how we have used color recently.

How to Merge Conflicting Aesthetics in Decor

When you’re not designing a home from scratch, it often means that you’ll have pieces from different places and styles that may or may not coordinate. You might be moving in with a partner who has completely different aesthetic values, or perhaps you’ve inherited antique furniture that doesn’t blend with your contemporary home. Fortunately, merging different design styles is completely possible and will ultimately add personality to your spaces.

As a leading Chicago interior design firm, we’ve worked in every interior design style imaginable and know exactly how to create a warm, welcoming space no matter what. Here are our tips on how to integrate different interior design styles to create a unique, eclectic mix that will feel like home.

Start with Neutrals

When you are merging different design styles, it’s really important to keep everything as simple as possible, which means starting with a neutral base. We start with either beige or white walls, providing a blank slate that can serve as a backdrop for any kind of decor. You can add color in later once you’ve placed your key furniture pieces.

Avoid Dividing Rooms By Style

We view every home project holistically with each room flowing into the next. It’s an easy mistake to think that using one style in one room and one style in another will solve the issue of different styles. In fact, it creates a more chaotic atmosphere. Instead, it’s much better to bring different style pieces together to create an eclectic room aesthetic that carries throughout the home.

Choose a Focal Point

Once you’re ready to start decorating, we suggest starting with one focal piece that can serve as the middle ground between your conflicting interior design styles. It may be a sofa, rug, or work of art – something large that will immediately grab attention. Using this as the anchor, you can then slowly bring in pieces that coordinate in some way, whether through color, material, or texture.

Color as a Unifying Factor

On that note, color is the easiest way to blend conflicting design elements. When two pieces share the same color family, they naturally feel in sync. For example, even if you are using a traditional Persian rug with a balloon dog sculpture, as long as they both feature a shade of red, they won’t look out of place together. A shared color acts as a bridge, creating a natural visual flow in the room.

Use Blank Space

We definitely believe in the power of negative space when you are working with diverse decor. Leaving space wherever possible between furniture and accessories that are not the same style will allow them to breathe, avoiding clashing. When you have an eclectic style, it’s important to keep accessories minimal to keep your space from feeling cluttered.

Rather than trying to avoid the tension between conflicting interior design styles, learn to embrace it! The contrast between different aesthetics can actually be really refreshing, creating a space that feels like home, rather than a cookie-cutter design. Instead of fighting for common ground, let the interplay between the conflicting styles become the defining feature of your home's decor.

Transformative Kitchen Island Designs

The central point of any kitchen, the island is so much more than just a functional space to prepare meals. Whether you want yours to be a place to gather, provide storage, or make an artistic statement, redesigning your island can provide an entirely new perspective on your kitchen.

To provide you with some inspiration for your own kitchen island renovation, our team of Chicago interior designers have shared their favorite kitchen island ideas. These transformative kitchen island designs will no doubt bring a sense of excitement and creativity into your culinary haven.

Statement Stone

Stone surfaces, from granite to marble to quartzite have always been popular for kitchen island countertops. However, lately we’ve seen more and more unique and beautiful stone surfaces with rare colors and naturally occurring striations that you don’t see everyday. From pink and green veined marble to blue granite and moody onyx, the possibilities for unique stone are endless. We love how statement stone adds an instant wow-factor to a kitchen, turning a boring island into a work of art.

Curved Kitchen Island

Instead of a conventional straight-edged island, we’ve been loving sleek, curved islands that add an element of softness. A curved island not only feels fresh and contemporary, but it also takes up less space. No more running into sharp corners as you are cooking! A curved shape is also easier for guests to gather around, which makes this type of island perfect for entertaining.

Kitchen Island with Storage

One of the biggest problems we hear from our clients is not having enough storage in their kitchens. While a pantry is great for food and large appliances, adding built-in cabinet storage in your island adds a level of access that will make your entire cooking experience more enjoyable. Keeping pots, pans, and cookbooks within the island makes it a lot easier to grab what you need when you need it. Say goodbye to cluttered countertops forever!

Waterfall Kitchen Island

Before starting your remodel, we always recommend taking the time to develop a well-thought-out plan of action. To get you started, we created a step-by-step guide outlining the main steps in transforming your home.

1. Set Your Goals

What are the main reasons for your home remodel? Are the rooms old and in need of repair? Are you just looking for a refresh in aesthetics, or do you want to increase the value of your home with sleek upgrades? By outlining your key priorities from the start, you’ll have an easier time outlining the direction of the project.

2. Gather Inspiration

This is the fun part! Gather inspiration from home improvement/design magazines, browse your favorite websites online, and visit local showrooms to explore design styles and trends. We recommend flagging your favorite articles/photos and determining what your interior design style is – if you need help, consult this guide. It’s also important to look at specific materials and fixtures to understand how they can improve the functionality of your rooms. Where possible, consider energy-efficient appliances that will save you money in the long-run while being better for the environment.

3. Hire a Professional

For most home remodels, it pays to have the help of a professional. As one of the best Chicago interior design firms, we’ve completed countless home remodels and know exactly what is needed to bring your project to life. It’s always great to get a recommendation from others who have had similar work done - if you’re working with us, we’ll help you organize everything involved in your remodel.

4. Set Your Budget

Once you’ve determined the scope of your project and the work needed, it’s time to sit down and create a budget. We recommend creating a contingency budget for any unexpected expenses that may arise. To get started on your budget, consult this guide: How to Create an Interior Design Budget

5. Create Your Plan/Timeline

Once you’ve decided on the work you want to have done, outline your project from start to finish. This will include everything from major renovations to small design tweaks. Consider how long it will take to order your furniture and supplies and the amount of work that needs to be done. Then, set a timeline with some wiggle room.

6. Obtain Permits and Approvals

Depending on the scope of your home remodel, you may need to consult with local regulations to get permits for the work being done. The professionals working with you on the project can help you through this step.

Now that you have a general idea of what needs to be done to start your renovation journey, it’s time to dig deep and explore all the smaller details! If you need a helping hand or expert advice, we recommend getting in touch with our Chicago interior designers. Let's turn your space into one that truly reflects your vision. A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Bathroom Tiles

Ready to make splash with your bathroom tiles? The endless patterns, textures, sizes, and finishes can be overwhelming, but we’ve created specific guidelines that help us narrow down our choices. From classic subway tiles to artisan Spanish tiles, there are many options that will create a wow-factor in your bathroom at home. In this guide, we’ll explore some of the key factors that we keep in mind when selecting bathroom tiles.

Materials: Natural or Manmade Bathroom Tiles

The choice between natural and manmade bathroom tiles is really important both aesthetically and in terms of practicality.

a. What to Consider: Natural Tiles

From marble to granite, slate, and travertine, natural tiles bring an inherent sense of sophistication to any bathroom. We love the organic, imperfect quality of natural tile as no one tile will be exactly the same. It gives you a beautiful, custom appearance that will make your bathroom one-of-a-kind. However, keep in mind that natural tile is more expensive and can show more scratches and general wear and tear than manmade alternatives.

b. What to Consider: Manmade Tiles

Designed to be durable, easy to clean, and generally more cost-effective, manmade tiles put you in complete control. Some of the most popular manmade tile choices are ceramic, porcelain, and glass, which can be customized according to your color and finish preferences. They are a great choice for bathrooms that get a lot of usage.

Size

The best way to decide on tile size is to keep them proportional to the size of your bathroom. Stick to the scale of your bathroom and you can’t go wrong. For example, using smaller tiles in a small bathroom can create the illusion of more space, plus small tiles are easier to install in tight corners. Large tiles in a large bathroom, on the other hand, can create a clean, sleek and open effect that makes the room feel even more spacious.

Layout

Whether you are opting for a patterned or mosaic tile or a solid colored tile, the layout of your tiling can create movement and interest in your bathroom. From the shower to the bathroom floor, getting creative with the way you lay your tiling can make your bathroom shine as a gem of the house. Some popular tile layouts include herringbone, chevron, staggered brick, and pinwheel. Of course you can also do a vertical or horizontal tile layout to keep things tidy!

Gloss or Matte?

If you’re wanting a more glam look, a gloss tile can really dial up the beauty of a bathroom. We love the reflective, polished appearance of a gloss shower tile, like the black tiles we used in this recent bathroom design. However, a gloss finish does require a bit more care, plus it can become slippery when wet so it’s best used on the walls or backsplash. Matte tiles, on the other hand, are perfect as bathroom floor tiles. While less eye-catching, matte is more easy to maintain.

Grout

Finally, don’t forget the finishing touch of grout. Choosing the right grout can not only enhance the look of your tiling, but also make your flooring more safe by providing an anti-slip surface. Remember that while white and other light colored grout looks fresh and clean, it can pick up dirt quickly, so dark or colored grout might be the best option.

Tiling Advice from Chicago Interior Designers

From materials to size, pattern, layout, finish, slip resistance, and grout type, there is a lot to consider in the world of bathroom tiling. Fortunately, as a one of the leading Chicago interior design firms, we have the expertise to make a tiling project gorgeous and stress-free. Contact us today and we’ll help you turn your bathroom into a highlight of your home!

Living Room Seating Ideas that Bring People Together

Size, scale, and color are critical in living room design, but there’s one key factor that interior designers always pay attention to that you might not know: Room functionality. The way you set up a room can make or break the way you want it to be used. When you create lots of cozy places to sit together, you can foster a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s so important to get your seating arrangement right so that your living room feels like a space of intimacy and connection, rather than an uncomfortable place that no one wants to spend time in.

Here are a few seating arrangement ideas that you can use to create a more inviting living room at home.

Group Your Seating Around a Focal Point

To begin, we always choose a central point to focus on and build our living room seating arrangement from there. This might be a coffee table, fireplace, or TV console. By having that central focus, you give your guests something to gather around. It encourages face-to-face conversation, making your living room feel cozier and more inviting.

Use Flexible and Lightweight Furniture

We highly recommend using versatile living room seating or lightweight, moveable furniture if you are planning to entertain frequently. For example, a modular sectional can be reconfigured to suit a your exact number of guests and the activity taking place. Additionally, you might like to have several small ottomans, padded footstools or poufs that can be used as seats, footrests, or tables if needed. These are easy to move around and put away when not needed.

Pull Furniture Away from the Wall

While it might seem like you are creating a more open space by placing all your furniture along the wall, it can unfortunately create a sense of detachment and hinder social interaction. Surprisingly, it actually makes a living room feel more spacious to keep a separation between the walls and furniture as it provides necessary breathing room. To achieve the right balance, design your room from the center, rather than from the walls.

Vary the Types of Living Room Seating

Everyone has their own requirements to feel comfortable, whether it’s supportive cushions for back pain or the ability to recline in front of the TV. To accommodate your guests, it’s always a good idea to have several different types of living room seating available. For example, you might include recliners, swivel chairs, or armchairs with ottomans. In one of our recent projects, we grouped two armchairs, a sofa, and a padded bench around a coffee table to provide maximum seating options. Having a diversity of living room seating options ensures that everyone can find a comfortable spot that suits their needs.

Create Separate Zones

In a large, open plan room, it makes sense to divide the space into several distinct zones. You might focus one area around entertainment and another for conversation or reading. Creating zones makes for more intimate spaces. It also breaks up a large space, making it feel less intimidating.

The living room is a place that requires thoughtful design that will continually make it a favorite gathering spot for family and friends. Beyond the furniture, it’s important to bring in elements like cozy cushions, blankets, soft lighting, and personal touches that make your living room feel like a reflection of you. Cherish every moment in your living room and make it feel special – it is the heart of your home, after all.

Organizing Must-Haves for a Small Space

We believe that living in a small space doesn’t mean living small… with the right organizational tools and storage systems, you can easily transform a compact home into a well-organized dream. It might take a bit of creativity and a lot of decluttering, but with our space-saving solutions and innovative design services, we make the most of any space.

Here are a few storage ideas for small spaces that will help you maximize efficiency and create a beautiful, comfy place to call home.

Invest in Storage Containers of All Shapes and Sizes

In any home, but particularly a small one, every object should have its designated place. Throwing everything in a drawer might be a temporary fix, but it will make it impossible to find anything in the long run. Instead, try using an array of storage containers, from clear bins to beautiful wicker baskets. For example, in the kitchen, we use stackable containers, spice racks, and drawer dividers to optimize cabinet and countertop space. For the bathroom, try over-the-door organizers, shower caddies, and wall-mounted towel racks. In the bedroom, we recommend under-bed storage containers as well as additional closet shelving.

Shelving Galore

Instead of letting things pile up in a heap, make the most of your wall space by adding shelving in unexpected places. Of course, you can add shelving to your closets, but why not also try adding open shelving above the sofa, bed, kitchen counter, or dresser? You can use your shelving to display favorite books, plants, dishes, and candles, leaving your cabinet space available to house less decorative homewares.

Shoe Cubbies

In an entryway or mudroom, shoe cubbies are a practical and sleek way to keep your shoe collection neatly arranged and easily accessible. Whether you’re using a freestanding cubby or built-in shelving, like in our recent entryway project, shoe cubbies allow for easy selection of your footwear while maximizing the use of space. There’s nothing worse than having a big pile of shoes that just keeps growing! Cubbies help keep everything organized while protecting your beloved shoe collection in the process.

Consider Furniture with Built-In Storage

Multi-functional furniture pieces with built-in storage are the perfect way to blend function and form in a small space. For example, ottomans with hidden storage offer a convenient way to keep items out of sight while providing additional seating or acting as a footrest. They are ideal for storing extra blankets, pillows, or even toys. Bed frames with built-in drawers are another great space-saving solution as they offer valuable storage for seasonal clothing and shoes.

When space is limited, it's really important to fill every nook and cranny in your home in the most efficient way. A few small space organization tools can make a big difference in each room, saving you the effort of needing to declutter all the time. Not to mention, these space-saving solutions will provide you with a newfound peace of mind.

Why You Should Consider Custom Furniture

The furniture you choose can have a huge impact on any room design. Whether you live in a tiny condo or a large home, a custom piece of furniture is an excellent way to personalize your space. It’s also sometimes the only way to get exactly what you want.

Custom Furniture Fits

Designing for smaller or oddly-shaped spaces is difficult, especially if you are relying on traditional mass-produced furniture pieces. When you buy a custom piece, you can have it made to fit the space that you live in. While traditional furniture can be modified, it’s often less expensive to have the piece made for your space from the beginning - something that many homeowners find quite surprising.

And it’s not just size. It’s often hard to find a mass-produced piece that exactly fits your vision of a space. Usually something is always just a bit off; whether it’s the materials, the color, or the size, it can be hard to find a traditional piece that is just right for what you want.

Versatility

Custom furniture is very versatile. Need some extra storage? Have a custom bench, ottoman, or even sofa made. Extra storage can be incorporated right into the piece. Need a bookshelf that features a few adjustable vertical shelves? A custom furniture maker can do that for you. It’s a great way to ensure you get exactly what you need.

Quality

Custom furniture is often much higher quality than mass-produced features. Because your piece isn’t being made on an assembly line, the maker can create your piece out of whatever materials you choose - including higher quality materials than you’d normally find in a furniture factory. Of course, higher quality materials also means that your custom furniture will last much longer than a piece that’s been mass-produced in a factory - which brings us to our next point.

Value

One thing that trips many people up when they’re shopping for custom furniture is the cost. While the initial price can sometimes cause a bit of sticker shock, this can always be lowered based on the materials you choose. It’s also very important to remember the value that you’re getting. When you order a custom-made piece of furniture, you’re getting exactly what you want and expect. You’ll get to choose the dimensions, shape, features, and even materials that your piece is made from. So, yes - it may initially be more expensive than a mass-produced piece of furniture, but it will also carry more value. It will be made exactly for you and the space you’re creating.

So the next time that you’re looking for the perfect piece to fit your newly-designed living room or bedroom, consider ordering some custom furniture instead. Not only will you be pleasantly surprise at the many options available to you, you’ll be happy with the quality and value that you’ll get as well. A custom-made piece is something you can keep for years - and there’s nothing quite like seeing something that was made especially for you and your space every day.

Indoor Outdoor Living: Creating A Sense of Flow

As the warmer weather approaches and summer draws near, now is a great time to think about how to make the most of both your indoor and outdoor spaces. Whether you're planning on hosting barbecues or rallying your friends for weekend picnics, creating a seamless flow between your indoor and outdoor areas can make a big difference in how you experience your home. Inspired by the designs of popular Chicago interior designers, here are some of the best ways to prep your home for warmer weather.

Embrace Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is a concept that revolves around connecting with nature and bringing natural elements into your home. By incorporating natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants into your home design, you can create a sense of harmony and balance in your indoor outdoor living spaces. This is one of the simplest ways to create a sense of flow with the outdoors. It can be as easy as adding a few potted plants or a vase of flowers in every room, or as complicated as building a vertical garden or living wall inside your home.

Open Up Space Indoors

Depending on the level of renovation you are planning, there are many ways to redefine your rooms and open them up to the outdoors. If your home is undergoing a large renovation, you might want to remove walls to create an open floor plan. An open plan will allow for new unobstructed pathways to the outdoors, maximizing a sense of flow. On a smaller scale, rearranging your furniture so that it doesn’t block doorways and maximizes space can help you create that same sense of flow. Finally, consider installing sliding glass doors, skylights or large windows to further enhance the amount of light and open air that can come inside.

Add Splashes of Warm Color Throughout

Incorporating splashes of warm colors throughout your indoor and outdoor areas is a quick way to make them feel connected while celebrating the brightness of summer. Pick out accent pillows, throw blankets, rugs and accessories in colors such as red, yellow, and orange to create a cheerful and upbeat feeling. For more revitalizing color ideas, take a look at this Living Room Color Guide.

Use Wicker and Rattan Furniture Indoors

While wicker and rattan are often used as outdoor furniture materials, we love bringing them inside to add an organic feel to any living space. These materials are lightweight, durable, and have a timeless charm that fits with any decor style. They are also very versatile – use them for accent pieces, statement furniture, or as functional pieces such as chairs, coffee tables, or even bed frames. Indoor outdoor furniture made from wicker and rattan is also eco-friendly and sustainable, making this a great option for those who prioritize environmentally-conscious home decor.

Spruce Up Outdoor Seating Areas

Your outdoor furniture has likely been covered all winter and is in need of perking up. If washing your cushions isn’t cutting it, consider having them reupholstered in weather-resistant fabrics for the new season. You can then add some new pillows, throws, and seating options. Bring in a wicker or rattan ottoman that can be used as a footstool or a seat while coordinating with your indoor pieces. Add some unique lanterns or string lights to create a magical set up for parties.

Creating a sense of continuity between your indoor and outdoor spaces will help you make the most of both. This connection allows for the natural light and fresh air to flow throughout your home, creating a feeling of expansiveness and tranquility. Whether you're relaxing indoors or enjoying the great outdoors with your neighbors and friends, having a harmonious flow between the two can help you feel more connected to nature.

Kitchen Design Ideas that Make a Statement

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is where families come together to cook, eat, and share stories. It's a place for laughter and memories, where the aroma of freshly baked bread or a pot of simmering soup can evoke feelings of comfort and warmth. As such, it's important to create a kitchen that is not only functional, but also looks stylish and inviting. With the right lighting, colors, and materials, you can transform your kitchen into a space that not only serves as a hub for daily activities, but also makes a statement.

If you're looking for some inspiration to transform your kitchen, our Chicago interior designers have come up with the following striking kitchen design ideas to try.

Muted Hue Cabinets

If you want to add a pop of color to your kitchen, consider painting your cabinets a muted, yet fresh hue. Navy blue, sage green, and dusty rose are all popular cabinet colors that add a sense of depth and sophistication. These colors can be used to create a calming and cozy atmosphere in the kitchen, while still keeping to the style of your home. To keep the look of your cabinets modern, consider integrating natural wood or metal accents into your kitchen. We recommend balancing out the colors and materials with neutral countertops and backsplashes to prevent the space from feeling too overwhelming.

Colorful Stone Countertops

Natural stone countertops are a functional and beautiful choice for any kitchen, and they’re coming back into style this year in a big way with colorful hues that create a focal point. Whether you choose granite, marble, quartz, or quartzite, a stone countertop in pink, onyx, blue, or green can serve as the perfect complement to your kitchen design. While these ultra unique countertops are an investment, they are durable and easy to clean, making them a practical choice that many Chicago interior design firms stand by.

Create a Coffee Nook

If you're a coffee lover, a cozy coffee nook is a must in your kitchen! Transform a small corner of your kitchen into your own functional coffee station, bringing all your favorite beans together. You may need to add some open shelves for storing mugs and coffee accessories, or you can hide everything away in a cabinet. You can even add a comfy oversized chair nearby to make this nook the perfect spot to start your day.

Eye-Catching Lighting

One of the easiest ways to add drama to your kitchen is with bold and beautiful lighting fixtures. Consider hanging a few statement pendant lights over your kitchen island, like the sparkling set of three we used in this kitchen design. Or, hang a chandelier over your kitchen table to create a focal point in the room. To choose your fixtures, think about the size of the room, the height of the ceilings, and the style of your kitchen cabinets and countertops. Don’t forget the importance of the color temperature and brightness of the bulbs, as these factors can affect the ambiance in the room. In addition to your statement fixtures, you’ll still want recessed lighting or another type of bright light over your cooking areas.

Boldly Patterned Tiles

If you want to add some pattern and texture to your kitchen, consider redoing your backsplash with bold tiles. The options are endless, from the colors and patterns available to the way in which you arrange them. We love handpainted tiles that feature designs using grapes, lemons, and flowers to match the interests of our clients. Or, if you want a more modern feel, consider tiles with a geometric pattern. Hexagonal, diamond, and triangular tiles in a range of colors can be arranged in various patterns to create a statement backsplash.

As the weather warms up and summer approaches, many of us start to think about hosting friends and family in our homes. Using some of these kitchen ideas will give your space a much-needed spring refresh. Not only will a fresh coat of paint or new tile backsplash make your kitchen feel more inviting, it can also add value to your home and make it more functional for cooking. With a newly renovated kitchen, you'll be able to whip up delicious meals and host memorable gatherings all summer long.

If you're ready to transform your kitchen into the gathering place of your dreams, get in touch with us today to schedule a consultation.

How to Choose the Perfect Window Treatments for Your Home

When it comes to selecting window treatments, we believe in combining form and function to create a beautiful dressing for your home. More than privacy and light control, window treatments are an essential part of a room’s overall look that enhances the room and makes it feel more polished. As such, the style, materials, embellishments, and hardware all make a big difference in your enjoyment of a room.

You may already have an idea on what you’d like in your window treatments, or you might be starting from scratch. Either way, we’re here to help you with the finer points so that you can find the perfect window treatments to complement your space.

Types of Window Treatments

There are four main types of window treatments, so before looking at infinite options, start by narrowing down your selection to one of the options below.

Curtains - Classic curtains, like the ones seen in this recently designed living room, are made from fabric suspended by a rod at the top of your window. They are typically made from lightweight fabrics and can be floor-to-ceiling or shorter depending on your preference.

Drapes - Heavier in weight than curtains, drapes have a lining on the back that blocks out light and provides extra insulation. They usually extend from the top of the window to the floor and are often used in formal settings, such as dining rooms and living rooms. They are perfect if you want to add some elegance and drama to a traditional home.

Blinds - Window blinds are a great option for those seeking complete privacy and light control. They are available in various hard materials, like wood, metal, and plastic and cover just the area of the window. They feature slats that fold as you pull the lifting mechanism.

Shades - Shades are typically made from fabric and operate in a similar way to window blinds in that they fold up to the top of your window. There are various styles of shades available, including Roman shades, roller shades, and cellular shades.

Key Considerations

There’s a lot to think about when you’re selecting window treatments and it really depends on the room you are designing. As we mentioned, privacy and blocking out the light are the most important factors, so start with thinking about that and the intended purpose of your room. Bedrooms and bathrooms will need complete privacy whereas a living room or kitchen can have more airy window treatments like sheer curtains.

It’s very common to leave window treatments as the last decorating choice because it narrows down your options and makes it easier. For example, if you have a minimalist home filled with neutral colors and light wood, you’ll likely want an inconspicuous shade, wooden window blinds, or sheer curtains. If you have a traditional-style home, you may want to consider more ornate window treatments such as drapes or curtains.

Popular Window Treatments for 2023

This year, across all Chicago interior design firms and beyond, there’s a mixture between using boldly patterned and minimalist, classic window treatments. For those who are leaning into bright colors and more cozy, vintage styles, we’d recommend patterned curtains with handmade, beautiful details like embroidery and scalloped edges. On the other hand, timeless window coverings such as plantation shutters and Roman shades continue to be popular as a more sleek and unobtrusive choice. Lightweight, sheer curtains are also on the rise in popularity this year.

Making Window Treatments Look Expensive

While custom window solutions can cost a small fortune, there are other ways to make your treatments look and feel more luxurious. Start by looking for high-end materials like linen, silk, velvet, and if you are getting plantation shutters, natural wood. From there, add embellishments like decorative trim, tassels, or fringe that will make your drapes or curtains feel more ornate. Finally, choose a rod and hardware worthy of your beautiful window treatments.

Your window treatments are hopefully going to last you for years, so it’s worth it to do some research and invest in a beautiful, high-quality choice that complements your home. Often, for the sake of curb appeal, clients choose the same treatments for the front rooms of their house. This makes choosing treatments an even bigger decision, but not to worry – it’s also possible to mix up your options and add them one at a time. If you have any questions about what window treatments will be best for your home, please get in touch. Our Chicago interior designers have years of experience choosing timeless window treatments that won’t go out of style.

Energizing Living Room Color Ideas To Revitalize Your Space

Walk into any room and what do you notice first? Typically, it’s color. Color has a strong impact on our senses, and as a result, our Chicago interior designers recommend choosing colors that fit the intended purpose of a room. While bedrooms and bathrooms are often designed to feel serene, living room color ideas run the gamut from light blues to bold reds. While some might opt for a calm neutral-hued living room, others prefer the opposite – a room that is energizing and full of life.

A vibrant living room is ideal for anyone who hosts a lot of gatherings, enjoys playing board games with family members, or simply loves a bright and bold aesthetic. You don’t have to be a maximalist to create an engaging space. Using the principles of color theory, which we previously discussed in our Color Balance post, here are some of the best living room color schemes to make your space more exciting.

Warm Hues

Take a look at a color wheel. All the hues within the red to yellow range are considered to be warm colors, which are known for evoking positivity and enthusiasm and enabling productivity. By comparison, cool hues like blue, green, and purple provide a more relaxed ambiance. When you’re designing a space for social gatherings, choosing warm hues as your primary colors makes a lot of sense. Once you’ve chosen one or two warm colors to be dominant, we do recommend adding a pop of a cool color, like blue or green for balance. For example, use blue pillows in a yellow room or add a few plants for contrast.

Bright White

White is anything but boring. While it can feel cold if used incorrectly, there are plenty of ways to make it warm and inviting for your living room. Start by choosing a white paint that has a warm undertone of yellow or red. The undertone will provide the white with a more cozy, rather than cold feel. Then, bring your room to life with unique furniture, accent pieces and art that add vibrancy and texture to the space. Adding in warm metallic accents, like gold, bronze, and copper will also provide shimmer to make your space feel alive.

The Pink Effect

Pink is a warm color, but it has a reputation for being soothing as well as inviting – some people call this the “pink effect.” While it’s not the most common choice for a living room, it is a great one. A pale pink or peach paint can come across as very stylish and modern, or you can go all-in with a bold hot pink color scheme. Pink can look dreamy with shades of green and white as your accent colors.

Refreshing Green

Green is considered a cool color, but its not one that will put you to sleep. Instead, it invigorates the senses, bringing renewal to your living room. Light shades of green like mint and sage are great for adding subtle color to a room, while darker hues like forest green can make a more dramatic impact. Or, try emerald green, which has a luxurious feel that can create a glamorous atmosphere. Incorporate plants, natural fiber rugs, and other accessories with green hues to give the room an extra touch of life.

Choose Colors that You Love

Most importantly – choose colors that make YOU feel good. Your living room should be a reflection of your style and personality, so make sure that you really love the colors you choose. Sometimes, thinking outside the box can lead to some really stunning results, so don’t be afraid to put all your favorite colors together to see what happens.

Try It Out

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there, consider looking for living room paint ideas from interior design magazines, websites, and social media. There are lots of great images online that can help you decide which colors and tones to use in your living room. Before committing to your colors, we recommend trying out different color swatches to help you get an idea of how your colors will look together in the space.

Color is only one part of interior design, but it’s so important. Most Chicago interior design firms spend a lot of time making decisions related to color. The way colors interact with one another in a room is an art form in itself and using color theory is just one method of creating a space that is inviting and visually stimulating. Our Favorite Instagram Accounts for Design Inspiration

When working on a home project, our Chicago interior designers pull inspiration from a number of sources found all around us in our everyday lives. From nature to art to fashion, the impact of culture and society on our designs is profound. While social media isn’t perfect, one of our favorite places to find accessible inspiration is Instagram. It has made finding and sharing interior design inspiration very easy and for that, we have to give it credit.

We have several channels that we follow religiously, and wanted to share those with you today. While some are interior design Instagram accounts, some are by artists in other industries – from 3D art to floristry. All art forms are connected and we love using ideas outside the industry standards to bring our creative spaces to life.

Paul Milinski @paulmilinski

The owner of Milinski Studio, Paul Milinski is a digital artist known for producing incredible still images of dreamy spaces. While his projects remain in the digital sphere, they challenge the constructs of modern architecture, furniture, and design. We love seeing his fantastical imagery pop up on our feed every day. His play with the limits of physics and reality inspires us to think outside the box in our own designs.

Berg Interior @berg.interior

Much like our designs, those of Berg Interior are filled with color, art, and luxe accents that make up their sophisticated signature style. We enjoy following their account, where they share a portfolio of stunning residential interiors. Whether it's a contemporary living room with warm neutral tones, floor-to-ceiling draperies, and a statement chandelier, or a salmon and turquoise bathroom with unique tiling, they bring a special quality to every room they design.

Kelly Wearstler @kellywearstler

Known for her west coast maximalist style, Kelly Wearstler is an iconic designer with a large portfolio of sophisticated, modern interiors. Her projects range from luxury residences to hotels, all of which showcase bold colors, eclectic materials, a play on proportions and captivating textures. On her Instagram, you’ll find her portfolio of projects, plus the things that inspire her daily, from flowers to her family. Like us, Kelly is also passionate about incorporating artwork into every one of her designs.

Pulp Design Studios @pulpdesigns

Another interior design firm we can’t get enough of is Pulp Design Studios. First of all, we love that the company is women-led. Co-founders Carolina V. Gentry and Beth Dotolo are two very talented designers who transform ordinary spaces into artistic visions. Known for using statement wall and ceiling treatments, they are experts at making a room feel serene and surreal at the same time. We love their use of texture and are inspired by their bold approach to layering art and standout accent pieces.

Fleur Inc @fleurinc

Finally, we are inspired by flowers! Fleur is one of our favorite accounts because they take floristry to the next level with over-the-top bouquets and hanging fixtures. Their use of color and ability to make a table or room feel magical is what our dreams are made of. They also operate a home and lifestyle shop in Chicago, where they sell flowers as well as home goods.

If you’re looking to spruce up your home decor, we highly recommend turning to social media for some design inspiration before starting your project. Whether it’s discovering new trends or finding an interesting item to add to your home, having a reliable source of inspiration can help you get the most out of your design process.
