At the beginning of each new year, we like to sit down and go through all the trends circulating in the interior design world. Here at Paula Interiors, we are led by creativity and our clients’ personal interests when creating designs. However, everything exists within a broader context, so it’s helpful to know what the biggest trends and innovations are as we embark on new design projects.
Here are our five favorite trends for the new year and some ways of bringing them home!
Color-Drenching
Say goodbye to minimalism – 2025 is starting with powerfully bold colors across every available surface. From the walls to furniture and decor, expect to see rooms bathed in rich, saturated hues. Jewel tones and earthy neutrals in particular are having a moment. Color-blocking, which is where a design incorporates large blocks of monochromatic color will be popular in 2025. As an example, we used color-blocking in this bathroom and this nursery to create dramatic, exciting spaces.
Sensorial Spaces
Design is going beyond sight. It will now include elements that engage the senses of sight, touch, smell, and sound. Here are some of the ways that designers will be expanding their sensorial reach:
Lighting: We believe lighting sets the tone of a space, which is why it’s so important to get it right! This year, statement lighting is trending, opening up opportunities for dramatic focal points and custom illumination.
Texture: We have always used texture to add dimensionality to rooms, but it’s also important to engage the sense of touch. Our emphasis this year will be on including a wide range of highly tactile materials. This might include layering velvet, linen, and woven knits alongside natural materials like stone and wood.
Signature Home Fragrance: Do you have a signature home fragrance? Now is the perfect time to choose one. Scent adds to the experience of a space and makes a home smell more personal.
Sound: From well-placed speakers to interactive artwork, beaded curtains, and tile flooring, sound can change how you feel and interact with a space. Designers are acutely aware that sound matters in design, and will take advantage of this in the coming year.
Comfy Furniture
Comfort has been a high design priority for several years now and this will continue into 2025. The trend is now leaning into rounded furniture with soft curves. Plush oversized sofas, including pit-sectionals, are more popular than ever. Soft coffee tables that double as ottomans are also trending. Pattern Mixing
As with color, patterns are being approached with a more maximalist hand in 2025. There are no rules when it comes to mixing – instead, it’s all about layering different prints in the same room. For example, we might pair ditzy florals with bold stripes; or geometric prints alongside organic textures. To keep patterns from clashing, we try to stick to one color palette or find another unifying element to connect the patterns.
Artisanal Embellishments
Adding handcrafted, artisanal accent pieces is a small way of making spaces feel more unique. Some ideas include:
Handwoven rugs
Hand-thrown pottery
Blown glass light fixtures
Hand-painted cabinet knobs
Custom-made furniture
Handmade baskets
All in all, we’re excited about the trends of 2025. They promote a sense of personalized style, comfort, and authenticity – all principles we stand behind.
